Zone RV's Financial Crisis: A $40 Million Debt Unveiled After a Sudden Collapse
The sudden collapse of luxury Australian caravan manufacturer Zone RV has left a trail of financial woes, with creditors owed a staggering $40 million. The company's sudden demise has left 240 staff unemployed and 180 customers in limbo, raising questions about the future of these stakeholders.
Zone RV, based on the Sunshine Coast, had an annual turnover of $70 million, but its financial troubles were evident even before its collapse. The company's latest annual report, obtained by the ABC, revealed a $4.75 million loss in the 2023-24 financial year, with net liabilities of $10.8 million. Auditors expressed concern about the company's ability to continue as a going concern, highlighting the need for additional capital or financing.
Creditors, including suppliers and customers, are facing a bleak outlook. Administrators Cor Cordis revealed that customers are owed $18 million, suppliers up to $20 million, and employee entitlements amount to $4 million. Taxpayers are also on the hook for $1.4 million in unpaid taxes. The situation is particularly dire for unsecured creditors, with the possibility of liquidation offering remote chances of recovery.
The company's financial troubles were evident in its cash flow. In June 2023, Zone RV had $2.4 million in cash, with a wage bill of $4.6 million and revenue of $77 million. However, the company still owed $400,000 to employees for leave and superannuation entitlements and $765,900 to ex-founder Matt Johns. Zone RV also held $16.3 million in customer deposits and progress payments, which were paid in advance for caravans.
Despite the financial crisis, Zone RV continued to take customer payments until the final hours before its shutdown. A small group of customers who paid their final instalments may be the most likely to receive their vans, many of which are finished or close to completion. However, the future is much less clear for the remaining customers, with those who have made first and second payments unlikely to receive their caravans, and those who have made a third payment facing an uncertain future.
The company's directors, including David Biggar, who is a director of at least 10 different companies, have faced scrutiny. The ABC attempted to contact Mr. Biggar at his registered address, but he was not at home. The financial woes of Zone RV serve as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of financial mismanagement and the impact on stakeholders, including employees, suppliers, and customers.
