In a tragic event that has deeply shaken the community of Shelburne County in Nova Scotia, locals have come together to support the family of 13-year-old Drew Nickerson, who lost his life following a horrific dog attack. While law enforcement authorities are diligently investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragedy, they emphasize their commitment to gaining a complete understanding of what transpired.
On the evening of January 3, Drew was riding his bicycle near a property on Upper Sandy Cove Road in Welshtown when he was attacked by three large breed dogs, which police have identified as two Cane Corsos and a Rottweiler. The severity of his injuries necessitated an airlift to a Halifax hospital, where he sadly succumbed to his wounds.
In the wake of the incident, the dogs involved were euthanized by a veterinarian the following day, and investigations are currently underway to check for rabies and other health concerns. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are actively gathering evidence, including video footage and witness accounts, to piece together the events leading up to the attack.
Staff Sgt. Mark Macpherson, the commander of the local RCMP detachment, reported that preliminary video evidence indicates the dogs managed to escape their property while Drew was riding his bike along the street. When questioned about potential criminal charges, Macpherson stated it is still too early to make any determinations. "Our primary focus is to ascertain the facts of the situation rather than rushing to conclusions regarding charges or lack thereof," he explained. He also noted that the dog owners have been fully cooperative with the investigation and that there have been no prior complaints recorded regarding these dogs.
The victim, Drew Nickerson, has been fondly remembered by friends and community members as a bright and cheerful boy who was exceptionally loved and cherished. A GoFundMe campaign initiated by a family friend, Trish Harris, has garnered nearly $60,000 to assist Drew’s mother, Dawn Schnare Nickerson, during this incredibly difficult time. Harris shared that Drew was the only child of his mother and had a vibrant personality that drew him many friends. Known for his love of outdoor activities such as swimming and horseback riding, he was frequently seen riding his bicycle around the neighborhood.
“In a small community, when one person experiences pain, it resonates with everyone,” remarked Harris. "Dawn expressed her heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has shown their support. She was overwhelmed and unsure how she would manage, fearing for her home, so this assistance will be invaluable."
In addition to financial support, the local fishing community has stepped in, donating items and fresh lobsters for raffles aimed at further aiding Drew's family.
The local soccer club, Southwest BLAST FC, took to social media to share that Drew had a passion for soccer and greatly enjoyed being part of his teams. They noted, "Drew will always be remembered for his radiant smile, kindness, and humor, as well as the positive light he brought into every room. We hope that those who knew him can find comfort in knowing just how deeply he was loved, and we welcome everyone to share memories and photos celebrating Drew’s joyful spirit."
Recognizing the emotional impact of this tragedy, counseling services are being made available to residents in this close-knit fishing community, situated about 200 kilometers southwest of Halifax. The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE) has confirmed that support is accessible for both staff and students affected by this loss. Executive Director Jared Purdy expressed condolences, stating, "We extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and all who have been touched by this loss. Such tragedies leave a lasting impression on our schools and the wider community."
TCRCE has arranged for psychologists and counselors to provide support at Shelburne Regional High School and neighboring educational institutions. These trained professionals are available to engage with students and staff, offering safe spaces for discussion and emotional support for anyone in need.
According to Macpherson, the event has caused significant distress not only for those directly involved but also for emergency responders and healthcare professionals who attended to the aftermath. "This week has carried a heavy somber tone throughout the community since this incident occurred," he remarked. "Our thoughts are firmly with Drew's loved ones during this challenging time."
Authorities are encouraging anyone with information who has yet to come forward to contact the Shelburne District RCMP at 902-875-2490.
