The numbers are staggering: Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta are collectively splashing over $400 billion on data centers in 2026, on top of the $350 billion spent this year. These companies are locked in a battle for AI supremacy, and the stakes are high.
Law firms are rubbing their hands together as the 'hyperscalers' like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud rush to expand their cloud services. Melissa Kalka, a partner at Kirkland & Ellis, reveals that deals worth $4-5 billion are now the norm. But here's where it gets controversial: as construction investments elsewhere stagnate, JPMorgan predicts a whopping $5 trillion will be poured into AI infrastructure in the next five years.
The sheer volume of data being generated is mind-boggling. But there's a catch. The US electrical grid is struggling to keep up with the demand. Robert James from Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman points out the underinvestment in infrastructure, and data centers are feeling the strain. S&P Global predicts a 22% increase in grid power required by US data centers by 2025, and nearly triple by 2030.
Local communities are pushing back, concerned about rising utility bills, electricity disruptions, excessive water usage, noise, and the centers' actual economic contributions. Data Center Watch reported that in Q2 2025 alone, local action blocked or delayed projects worth $98 billion, more than all previous quarters combined.
The solution, according to some, lies in nuclear technology. King & Spalding's Ridenour believes nuclear power is the long-term answer, and the US government has committed billions to small modular reactor developers. Pillsbury is advising on projects to build Westinghouse's advanced nuclear reactors, including for a leading US nuclear operator supporting data center demand.
However, concerns about an AI bubble are growing. Harvard economist Jason Furman suggests that data center spending accounted for 92% of US GDP growth in the first half of 2025. But is this a bubble waiting to burst? James argues that the demand for computation is real and will only grow, backed by tangible assets.
The race for data center supremacy is even reaching beyond Earth's atmosphere. Google is planning a network of solar-powered satellites with AI chips, while startups aim to turn satellites into data centers in space. Lonestar has already converted a lunar landing module for a data center on the Moon.
