Rockstar Games is facing a firestorm of controversy over its recent mass dismissal of 34 employees, with a shocking twist. The company claims the firings were not related to unionizing efforts, but rather due to employees sharing confidential information publicly. But here's where it gets contentious: the dismissed staff allegedly discussed company policies on a private Discord server, sparking a debate over what constitutes a 'public forum'.
According of People Make Games, the employees' discussions on a private, invite-only Discord server were the catalyst for their termination. This server, created in 2022, was a hub for Rockstar members interested in unionization and included reps from the Independent Workers of Great Britain (IWGB) union. While discussions between reps and union members were secure, there was a general channel accessible to both unionized and non-unionized employees.
Rockstar, however, maintains that the employees shared sensitive information, including details about upcoming game features, in a public forum, violating company policy and legal obligations. They vehemently deny any connection between the firings and union activities.
The local MP, Chris Murray, who raised the issue in Parliament, met with Rockstar but was left unconvinced. He and fellow MPs were initially denied entry to the meeting for refusing to sign an NDA, which they found concerning. Murray stated, 'I was not assured they followed proper legal procedures, and I am unconvinced of the necessity of these drastic measures.'
The IWGB union has accused Rockstar of union busting and filed a wrongful dismissal case, while over 200 Rockstar North employees have signed a letter demanding the reinstatement of their colleagues. Protests have erupted in London and Edinburgh, and the controversy rages on.
And this is the part that has the gaming industry talking: Were the employees' actions truly a breach of confidentiality, or is this a case of corporate retaliation against unionization efforts? The debate continues, and the public awaits further developments in this high-profile dispute.
