Rockstar Games is facing a firestorm of controversy over its recent mass dismissal of 34 employees, with a shocking twist. The company claims the firings were not related to unionizing efforts, but rather due to employees sharing confidential information publicly. According of People Make Games, the employees' discussions on a private, invite-only Discord server were the catalyst for their termination. This server, created in 2022, was a hub for Rockstar members interested in unionization and included reps from the Independent Workers of Great Britain (IWGB) union. While discussions between reps and union members were secure, there was a general channel accessible to both unionized and non-unionized employees.
Rockstar, however, maintains that the employees shared sensitive information, including details about upcoming game features, in a public forum, violating company policy and legal obligations. They vehemently deny any connection between the firings and union activities.
The local MP, Chris Murray, who raised the issue in Parliament, met with Rockstar but was left unconvinced.
