Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen Wins Australian Open 2026 | Dramatic Final Round vs Cameron Smith (2026)

In a nail-biting showdown at the Australian Open, Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen clinched his maiden DP World Tour victory, leaving home favorite Cameron Smith in the dust! This victory was a testament to his composure under pressure, especially in a final round that kept everyone on the edge of their seats.

Rory McIlroy, a name synonymous with golfing greatness, unfortunately, had a less-than-stellar performance, finishing tied for 14th place after a series of bogeys. But let's get back to the main event!

Neergaard-Petersen entered the final round with a two-shot lead over Smith. The tension mounted at the 10th hole when Smith sunk a stunning 15-foot birdie, while Neergaard-Petersen faltered with a bogey, tying them for the lead. The drama didn't stop there. The Dane regained his advantage with birdies on the 12th and 13th holes, only to have Smith match him on the 17th, setting the stage for a dramatic finish on the 18th!

And this is the part most people miss... It was on the final hole that Neergaard-Petersen truly showed his mettle. He executed a masterful up-and-down for par, while Smith, facing immense pressure, missed two crucial putts, resulting in a bogey. This allowed Neergaard-Petersen to secure the victory!

The Australian Open, the second event on the European tour's new schedule, not only brought Neergaard-Petersen a win but also a Masters exemption for next year. Additionally, the top three finishers, excluding those already exempt, earned spots in The Open in 2026 at Royal Birkdale.

Neergaard-Petersen, visibly moved by the victory, confessed, "It's hard. I'm really at a loss for words. It's been a battle all day. Even from the outside, you can look calm, but it was a storm inside (for me) all day."

Smith, despite the loss, expressed his satisfaction with being in contention again, saying, "It's been a while since I've had this feeling to be honest. I love that it's the Australian Open. I couldn't think of a better place to get back into form. It would shut a few people up."

But here's where it gets controversial... Smith, a two-time Australian PGA champion, is still chasing the Stonehaven Cup, the title of his national open. His last tournament victory was at the LIV tournament in Bedminster, England, in August 2022.

McIlroy, who won the Australian Open in 2013, and completed his career Grand Slam this year, made his first appearance since 2015. He called for a more favorable schedule to attract more top players. He pointed out the challenge of competing with other major tournaments, such as the Hero World Challenge and the Nedbank Challenge.

McIlroy emphasized the need for a better schedule, stating, "There need to be conversations had with people much more important than me that set the schedules, and hopefully the Australian Open can find a date that accommodates everyone and everyone can at least have the option to come down."

What do you think? Do you agree with McIlroy about the scheduling challenges, or do you believe the Australian Open's appeal is strong enough to draw top players regardless? Share your thoughts in the comments!
