The contracts are expected to help Ferguson Marine, which has built similar vessels in the past, secure future work. Forbes emphasized the importance of skilled employment and industrial capability in Inverclyde, where Ferguson's remains an essential part of the local economy.

But the controversy surrounding Ferguson's long-running issues with delayed and over-budget construction of flagship ferries cannot be ignored. The construction of the Glen Sannox and MV Glen Rosa, two dual-fuel LNG ships, faced design challenges and disputes over extra costs, leading to the firm's administration and eventual nationalization.

Despite these challenges, Ferguson Marine chairman Duncan Anderson remains optimistic, stating that the contracts would help make the yard "a leader in the industry in years to come." Chief executive Graeme Thomson added, "Our experience means we are uniquely positioned to build these four vessels. I have full confidence in our team's talent and technical skill."

GMB secretary Louise Gilmour echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of Ferguson's role in building ships for an island nation. She called for a pipeline of work to ensure the yard's long-term success.

While Conservative transport spokeswoman Sue Webber welcomed the news and the commitment to return the yard to the private sector, she expressed concerns about the SNP's past failures in building the Glen Rosa and Glen Sannox. Scottish Labour MSPs also welcomed the announcement but suggested it might be election-driven.
