Even the most seasoned Formula 1 commentators have moments that tickle their funny bone! David Croft, the beloved voice of F1 for Sky Sports and the BBC, recently shared some of his most memorable, and downright hilarious, experiences from the commentary booth at the Autosport Awards. After over a decade of calling the most thrilling races, you'd think he'd be immune to surprise, but it turns out, some things still make him erupt in laughter.
Croft, affectionately known as "Crofty," revealed his "craziest" live broadcast moments, and believe me, they're wild! Imagine this: a literal truck on the track in Korea! Or how about a canine intruder, a dog on the track in India? These are the kinds of unpredictable events that make live sports so captivating, and frankly, a little bit chaotic. But here's where it gets truly remarkable: Max Verstappen's astonishing drive at the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Starting a lowly 17th on the grid in torrential rain, Verstappen didn't just recover; he conquered, carving his way through the entire field to snatch victory. This was a career-defining performance for the Dutchman, a highlight of a season that saw him locked in an epic battle with McLaren's Lando Norris. Croft described it as "pretty crazy, in a positive way." And speaking of defying the odds, he also recalled Lewis Hamilton winning on three wheels at Silverstone in 2020 – a testament to pure skill and determination. That's four incredible moments that stand out in his mind!
But what about the moments that still bring a genuine chuckle? Croft admitted that even after years of experience, some memories are just too funny to forget. He playfully recalled Karun Chandhok crashing out after just three corners in Australia as a Friday driver, quipping, "I don't mean that. I'm sorry, Karun. It still makes me laugh, though, to be fair.”
And this is the part most people miss: the legendary Murray Walker's commentary of a 1982 on-track scuffle at the German Grand Prix. When Nelson Piquet and Eliseo Salazar tangled, leading to a physical confrontation, Walker famously described it as "fisticuffs!" Croft even reenacted the iconic call. He also reminisced about a moment in Monaco with Martin Brundle, where Croft himself was commentating over a replay, prompting a bewildered Brundle to ask, “What are you doing, Crofty?” It seems that even for the professionals, F1 can be a constant source of amusement.
David Croft is set to return to Sky Sports F1 for the 2026 season, kicking off on March 8th in Australia. We can only imagine what new, laugh-out-loud moments he'll be sharing then!
