A 26-year-old asylum seeker, Deng Chol Majek, has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of Rhiannon Skye Whyte, a 27-year-old hotel worker. The incident occurred in October 2024 at Bescot Stadium station in the West Midlands. Majek, who was born in 1998, stabbed Whyte 23 times with a screwdriver, with 19 of those wounds inflicted to the head. CCTV footage captured Majek following Whyte from the Park Inn hotel in Walsall, where they both resided and worked, to the station. The court heard that Majek had previously been reported to hotel security for his peculiar behavior of staring at female staff for extended periods.
The victim's family described Majek's actions as 'demonic and inhuman', emphasizing the ongoing emotional toll of the attack. They expressed their daily struggle to cope with the pain and suffering caused by the incident, and the added trauma of reliving Rhiannon's final moments in a public setting. The prosecution presented a strong case, utilizing DNA evidence, witness testimony, and CCTV footage to establish Majek's guilt. Despite his initial conviction in October, Majek showed no remorse, and the court emphasized his intent to kill, rejecting any claims of mitigating factors.
The judge, Michael Soole, stated that Majek's conduct before, during, and after the assault on Whyte indicated a clear intent to kill. He also determined that Majek was actually aged between 25 and 28, contradicting his initial claim of being 19. The court's decision highlights the severity of the crime and the need for justice, sending a strong message that such heinous acts will not be tolerated.
