The Adelaide Festival Corporation has issued a formal apology to renowned Palestinian Australian author Randa Abdel-Fattah, following a highly publicized dispute. The incident began when the corporation initially decided to cancel an invitation to Abdel-Fattah due to her critical commentary on Israel and Zionism. This decision sparked a wave of backlash, with over 180 authors and participants withdrawing from the event, ultimately leading to the cancellation of this year's Writers' Week. The corporation has now taken a step towards reconciliation, expressing deep regret for the harm caused and announcing that Abdel-Fattah will be invited to speak at their next event in 2027. In a social media post, Abdel-Fattah acknowledged the apology, accepting the invitation to participate in the 2027 festival. She also highlighted the ongoing impact of the incident, stating that while the statement acknowledges the harm, it is not a quick fix for the damage inflicted. The new Adelaide Festival Board, led by Judy Potter, has also extended an apology to Louise Adler, the former director, for the cancellation of the 2026 program. Potter emphasized the board's commitment to intellectual and artistic freedom, a powerful human right, and their intention to uphold it in future events.
