Bold headline: 2K Games Forms New Studio Led by Former The Initiative Leaders
Two ex-leaders from The Initiative have started a fresh studio under 2K Games. Both played key roles on The Initiative’s now-cancelled Perfect Dark project for Xbox.
Background: The Initiative was a high-profile first-party studio for Microsoft/Xbox, led by Darrell Gallagher, formerly at Crystal Dynamics. The studio attracted top talent from studios such as Rockstar, Santa Monica Studio, and Naughty Dog. The initial plan featured a remake/reboot of Perfect Dark as its inaugural title. However, the project was shelved earlier this year, and The Initiative was shut down. Now, two former employees—one of whom is Gallagher—are taking the helm of a new 2K Games studio.
New venture from The Initiative’s former Perfect Dark leads
Darrell Gallagher announced his new role via LinkedIn, confirming he will join 2K as SVP, Studio Head, tasked with spearheading a new studio that remains unnamed. His post conveyed enthusiasm about building a bold, collaborative studio at 2K:
“I’m excited to share that I will be joining 2K as SVP, Studio Head, where I’ll be building a new studio and leading an ambitious opportunity unlike anything I’ve taken on before. I’ve spent my career believing in what’s possible when great people come together with a bold vision. I can’t wait to get started with the exceptional team at 2K!”
In addition, Brian Horton, who served as Creative Director on Perfect Dark at The Initiative, revealed on LinkedIn that he will join Gallagher as VP Head of Creative. Horton previously directed creative work for Marvel’s Spider-Man and the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine. Details about other hires or the project’s concept remain undisclosed. Regardless, this acquisition signals a significant move that could hint at the storytelling direction The Initiative might have pursued had it continued.
What this could mean for 2K and fans
- The move brings together veteran creators with a track record of blockbuster franchises, potentially accelerating ambitious new IP development.
- Observers are curious about the studio’s initial project and how it will fit into 2K’s portfolio, especially after a high-profile cancellation in the industry.
- The involvement of Horton, known for Spider-Man and Wolverine, suggests a focus on strong narrative-driven games with wide appeal.
