Despite the suspension of the UGRAD exchange program, the United States witnessed an 18% increase in Pakistani students pursuing higher education, marking a significant milestone in academic collaboration. This surge in enrollment coincides with the opening of a new headquarters for the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP), symbolizing the enduring partnership between the two nations in the realm of education.
The Fulbright program, a cornerstone of this partnership, is celebrating its 75th anniversary in Pakistan, boasting the world's largest US-funded scholarship portfolio for master's and PhD studies. Despite the pause in UGRAD, which previously facilitated the exchange of 100-130 undergraduate students annually, the overall academic engagement remains robust. Pakistani students continue to secure visas with relative ease, and enrollment numbers show a promising 18% increase, according to 2023 data.
USEFP Executive Director Peter Moran attributes this success to the program's resilience, stating that Pakistani students are not encountering undue visa challenges. With nearly 10,000 Pakistanis currently enrolled in US institutions, including self-funded students, the future looks bright. Moran expresses optimism about the potential revival of UGRAD, which could once again provide opportunities for high school students.
The inauguration of the new USEFP headquarters, attended by US officials, scholarship alumni, and education leaders, underscores the depth of the bilateral academic partnership. Andy Halus, US Embassy Minister Counselor for Public Diplomacy, emphasized the commitment to fostering academic exchanges, highlighting the over 9,000 students who have benefited from the Fulbright program since its inception 70 years ago.
Aftab Haider, a Fulbright alumnus and CEO of Pakistan Single Window, a government-backed digital trade clearance platform, shared his transformative experience. He credited the scholarship with shaping his career, emphasizing its role in enhancing public service delivery and the private sector in Pakistan.
